Christopher Mathie: Live Painting Performance
This video demonstrates Christopher Mathie creating a large scale abstract acrylic painting split into two canvases. The canvas is pre painted before the painting demonstration is begun and contained an abundance of reds, maroons and crimsons to give a heavily textured look!

Using a series of techniques like scraping, dabbing, splattering Mathie successfully and freely moves the acrylic paint around the canvas to give a series of unusual textures and color combinations.
The acrylic paint is applied both thinly and thickly to the canvas and with the use of a large flat brush greater areas are covered to speed up his painting process. A spray bottle is used to dampen the paint as he reworks areas which have been covered previously to merge old and new colors together. The finished abstract painting has a very fresh and contemporary feel to it and is a great example of how to paint abstract art in a fun, free and easy way. The video is accompanied by live music which has a very calming influence on the mood.

Beautiful painting. The red and black colors that he had on at the beginning were to basically prime the canvas. Also a lot of the beautiful colors would not have turned out the color that they did if it were painted on different colors. Like when you mix paint, different colors give different results. If he had primed his canvas in white, you would get totally different results.
I agree about the red and black at the start. To me the stupid non artist artist, I would have left the red and black as it was. Not that the finished is not cool but red and black are my favorite colors together. I just do not get it I guess. sure wish I did …..

The papers you saw me holding in the beginning where photos I took in Laguna Beach, CA, of the rock formations in the ocean just off Heisler Park. I did refer to the photos a couple times throughout the performance for ideas about shape and color. But mostly I just painted and let it develop from my imagination.
I love the “high energy!” I am wondering if you had a plan to begin with. Was the paper that you held in your hand some kind of guide for you to direct some of your early strokes? It was a beautiful performance by Sam; a perfect compliment to your amazing work.
