Vincent Van Gogh – In His Own Words
Here in this short documentary, Vincent Van Gogh, provides an insight into his life that has not been seen before. Personal letters of the great artist have been used to create a very touching and moving programme.
Vincent van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland on March 30, 1853.
The son of a pastor, brought up in a religious atmosphere, Vincent was highly emotional and lacked self-confidence. Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist, van Gogh had had two unsuitable and unhappy romances and had worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art salesman, and a preacher in the Borinage
The way that he created happiness was through beauty. Although Van Gogh was a difficult man to work with and his temperament changed quite often, he was a man that was full of love and compassion.
Many things have been written about Van Gogh and often portrayed him as perhaps a crazed man. This documentary actually shows us the real man behind the canvas.
From viewing this,we are given an opportunity to see the real beauty that this man had within him. He was not a materialistic man and gave away his home and possessions to the church. He suffered with depression very badly and tried to cope the best he could by painting these amazing paintings we see today. Van Gogh, spent his life until his death on his own, with no wife or children. How hard that must have been for him. He strikes me as a man that yearned to be loved and had so much love within him, yet his only true love until he died was his art.
He knew that he could not change the fact that people may not buy his paintings, but even though he was often depressed he still had hope within him that one day somebody would.
Van Gogh painted for ten years and created over 800 pieces of work.
He became ill again with depression and this time it was too much for him and he took his own life.
His paintings have become famous world wide and not only museums, but people like you and I have his paintings hanging on our walls in our homes.
